Dahlia 'Purple Flame' | Botanical Studies #flowerfriday

This weeks #flowerfriday is the beautiful Dahlia 'Purple Flame'

This flower is a perennial that does well in sunny spots. The average flower size is about 10cm and they can grow to be up to around 100cm. They make fantastic cut flowers though i would recommend that you only cut them once they are in full flower bloom. They are not scented but they offer a fantastic pop of colour in the garden.

Growing
I've been growing mine in a pot in the courtyard and it has been doing really well. They like moist but well drained soil. They usually flower from July - November.

Getting Creative
These flowers are great for drying to use in dry flower displays, the petals when separated off are also great for using in pressed flower projects. The pigment from the petals i have found to be brilliant in small dye projects too.

Edible?
I have heard that all dahlias are edible but i can't be 100% sure about this, i need to do more research!
