Apple & Tomato Chutney Recipe | Homestead Life

If you saw my recent harvest post you'll have seen that we had a large amount of green tomatoes that needed processing. I have used green tomatoes in chutney recipes before and considered using an old tried and tested recipe however this time around I also had a bowl of chopped apple to hand that also needed processing and got to thinking that there must be a recipe out there combining tomatoes and apples.

After a little while searching, there were quite a few recipes using apples and tomatoes together, I found a recipe that sounded like something we might like so I gave it a go. I adapted it slightly to suit our taste and to the quantities of apples and tomatoes that we had available. It took around two hours to make but I'm pleased with how it turned out. We got six jars from the recipe we used, three of which were quite big.

Spicy Green Tomato and Apple Chutney

900g Apples (Peeled and chopped)
900g Green tomatoes (chopped)
2 cups of water
1 tbsp mustard seeds
2 large onions (finely chopped)
1 clove garlic or 1tsp garlic flakes
1/2 cup sultanas or raisins
3/4 cup sugar
1 tsp cayenne pepper
4 tsp salt
2 1/2 cups vinegar

I did film making this chutney and I'll be uploading it onto the YouTube channel soon. You'll find me on YouTube as Tomatoes and Tulips - Urban Homestead Life. On the channel I vlog about our family life as homesteaders. Each year we are learning more and more ways to become self sufficient and to grow, cook and preserve our own food. We are a long way from being self sufficient in our urban home but every little step takes us closer to living the life we dream of.

If you are a homesteader, in the UK or anywhere else in the world I'd love to connect. Please do get in touch.
